Smell your way to Bedding Blue Gills

Smell your way to Bedding Blue Gills I grew up summers living on the lake during the summer vacations and weekends during school months. I slept next to the window 70 ft away from the lake edge. During times when I awoke during the late spring and summer days I would be hit with that particular scent… those same times I would notice bedding gills sometimes many hundreds in numbers spawning in the shallows in front of our sea wall. The lake was near eutrophic in identity with muck approaching several feet in thickness… our cottage shore line was kept free of muck by constant swimming and boating use as well as maintenance with raking. The bluegills apparently loved it bedding on the firm sand bottom. So through the years I always associated the smell with spawning gills … but never knew the reason. Recently through some digging and research I learned it is a…See More

SLIP’S 2019 LOGS, STATUS AND STRATEGIES

2019 is finally here and another great year behind us for the books… taking back to back top certificate totals for the state of Michigan! … Breaking 2017 totals of 15 certs with a bottom of the ninth 22” trophy White Sucker! 2017-8 rocked!Michigan DNR with a new change for Master Angler program only one length per species going to be tougher to get the totals. So the goal this year is to target more species.I got the family on the trophies last year but on private lakes consequently they didn’t reach the DNR books… soooo more public lake fishing for the family! Need to get their names in the books!!It will make for an interesting year.Good Fishing Everyone!SlipSee More

Cracking the code on Pratt Lake

20170717- I’m considering adding another local lake to my hit list. On two separate trips the past couple days I’ve done some reconnaissance and contour mapping. 10 year history and Back ground check reveals a thin history of trophy B.Gills with one breaking the eleven inch mark… certainly raised my eyebrow a…

Five Lakes Bluegill Trophy Hunt- 2013

After doing a little research on lakes within a twenty mile radius of my location, on the DNR Master Angler website and a call to the local DNR office I was motivated and directed to focus for the Master Angler Bluegill from this lake. My experiences previously on this lake are…

Slip-I use a  bead between the bottom of my slip floats to cushion the blow it receives  from banging against the split shot when hook setting and/or  popping the float . Those plastic float stems don't split since I've done that .
