This is the bluegill from last year that I wish I had weighted.

it's perfect for calm water presentation , in light wind it's excellent, in rough water like boatwaves rolling across the water it just makes your bait rise and fall in the water column, but in your case where the wind blows all the time it's easer…

Porqupine quills usually come with a rubber band halfway up the shaft, I replace them with o-rings . Run your line through the o-ring then slide the o-ring back onto the quill, then run your line through the eyelet at the bottom of the quill , tie o…

Number 8 hooks are fine unless you want to catch smaller fish, after a fish has taken your bait a couple of times ,and he hasn't tasted the steel of your hook yet just shorten the distance between hook and float, I prefer a porqupine quill, a couple…

Greg, I know Osage Co. has plenty of ponds where biggens hang out, plus Skiatook Lake, and Kaw Lake . If you can put a cricket in that big bluegills face he going to eat it. I been to Pawhuska many times, I lived in Tulsa for 6 years.

We an't got no porcupines here in Arkansas, we had to go to Ebay to find them. Got some hot sauce that made me think I had eaten a porcupine the other day.

Greg, I'm tied up on a couple construction projects for the next 2 weeks , but after that it time to hit the water, I'm planning to photo lots this spring. Porcupine quills are the most sensitive float I've ever found and been using them for 40 year…

Hey , I'm a flyroder and use crickets all the time , about the only time I use artificial flys is when I run out of crickets or I'm fishing for smallmouths. The only limitation is it's harder to fish deeper than your flyrod is long but it is possibl…

Great post, keep it up.

I fish in brush so thick that if it was above the water line on the bank deer would hide in it,in these conditions I use 10 lb test flourcarbon and a wire hook with live crickets. If I happen to get hung up just a straight pull on the line will bend…
February 24
Well ,then would a 1 pound test be more more of a challenge? , catching a fish bigger than your pound test.
February 21
why do yall want to use 2 pound line to catch bream , they dont call it brain surgery , I use 10 pound test flouricarbin for my leader, and they dont see it, plus I catch big catfish that get in the way
February 20
Next year , me and boogerman , big dan , and phishead want to try that ice fishing, if you can guarentee that ice wont break under us

I agree with the free range fish! Ive caught several fish in ponds and small lakes that could push the 2lb mark. I ate em. To catch a 10" or better gill in the delta is a monster. I am insanely tickled to catch big fish in the creek. Thats what the…

Smallmouth like oxygenated water in the shoals , fish like the bubbles in the aquarium, the tiny bubbles at the bottom of the lake cool faster and oxygenate the water, blow co2 into water at 36 degrees and you got club soda, hey they dont call it br…

Bruce is right about oxygen levels, with all the catfish ponds in my area , the oxygen level is the lowest just before dawn, thats why everone uses aireators in their ponds. Now if you take a small compresser out on the ice and drop a weighted air l…

The Compleat 'Free Range' Angler

I guess by now you are wondering what my defination of " Free Range " is all about . To me it is the sporting chase of free roaming wild fish in a natural enviroment, that have the ability to escape being caught . They are wild fish that have not been raised or Aquacultured. Its far more satisfying knowing that you caught those large fish in the wild rather than them just answering a dinner bell, these are my true trophy fish.

Mr De Mill , I'm ready for my close up.

Went fishing between storms today, tried to take some pic with my cell phone ,caught some good ones but it's tought tryingto put them in the boat and take their pic at the same time. My porcupine quill is eight and a half inches long , this was my attempt, I'll do better next time.

60 years of Tackle

First let me say that the weather patterns this spring has got all my fishing water messed up, work has got me so tied down I feel like a sled dog, everybody I know is graduating from some kind of school, and want you to attend,I feel like I have no free time that is not spoken for, and I'm ready for bed, bream bed, that is the only thing I think that can reduce the stress in my life . The backyard will be dry enought to pull the boat up front and get it ready, I've cleaned my rods and tackle , I'… Continue

Boogie- add some split shot until just the red tip of that quill is above the water. Keep adding shot until you can get that tip as low as it will go.
This will allow you to cast that further and it will be much more sensitive for you. Quills are awesome but a bit heavy. I have an upgrade for you but those quills are pretty awesome!

You are on the right track. I was very excited to see who was fishing the quills - that would be porcupine quills everyone!

Party Pooper. Parade Rainer. Maybe you just can't stand progress. Don't matter. If they can build it, they will. Is they a record for how many you can get on a stringer, cause that's within MY reach. You can put a lot of butterbeans on one I know.

I started using quills this year but mine never stand up till a gill tugs on it. I guess I'm rigging it wrong, through the eye up top and the band holds it near the bottom half. Single "B" sinker. Clue me in on the mistake.

Wait a minute, The Bear wanted you and you didn't come?. You may not be smart enough to clue me in. Your profile photo looks like somebody I've seen before. He was all the time blowin' hisself up and fallin' off cliffs an' all! Is that why you didn't come, you was injured?

Your Lordship,
I just re-saw (is that a wurd?) your reply to Bruce Almighty's 20 words or less question. Am I to take it that you rig a flyrod like that? I saw that being done by a funny looking guy once and he swore by it. I tried my own rig later and just beat the water with it.

By the way, that funny looking feller tried to kill me in a lightning storm with his rig so if this question bugs you, nevermind.

ur lucky- i went fishin 2day after the first week in the 60's. I got skunked. The fish in there were either biting, or they werent there. I think all of them were still deep in the middle of the lake. the extreme wind didn't help much, either.
