Hey Boogie, are you sure that top fish is a flier? I think they look more like this...

I think the fish are actively feeding, but just taking the smaller jigs with a light touch. When I get a strike on the ocassional fast retreive, it is a solid hit, as if the fish were trying to get something that is attempting escape. But most strik…

Elena Joy Gronaw Catches Her First Bluegill...In Her Dreams!

Well, I am sure that you all knew it was bound to happen....that's right, my grandaughter, Elena Joy, woke up from an unsettling dream yesterday and proclaimed she had caught the biggest bluegill of her young life.

'Wow! Granpappy', she told me,..'.it really was this big, really!" How big? 'This big!' she squealed...

One of My Best Bluegill Fishing Days...Ever!

Wow! I just got back from fishing and as I speak we have a 'cool' front roaring through that is dropping temps from the upper 80's down to the low 50's tonight. But just a few hours ago it was warm and sunny and the previous 2 days had been record high low 90's. This pushed fish shallow and pre-spawn… Continue

ive caught some good gills thanks to your article in in-fisherman and am addicted to fishing for gills with fly tackle like brian voss below though my fish have been hiting a black #6 wolly bugger cant get more fun than that im hoping to surpase the 1 pound mark this year i saw one fish this year that looked like it could eat a duck so im out to catch him

It's an honor to have you as a 'big-bluegill friend'. I just re-read your article on 2-lb bluegills in In-fisherman. You mentioned that live bait is best for monster gills. While I agree whole-heartedly with that statement, I pretty much only fly fish when I go after 'gills. What flies do you think are best when pursuing 'gillzilla'? Lately, I've been doing well with my go-to fly....a #6 olive woolly bugger. I've also done quite well with the 'popper-dropper' set up, opting for a flashback beadhead rubber-leg pheasant tail or hares ear as the dropper and a white Betts popper. Any suggestions on other fly fishing rigs?

hey jim, i was on my way to baltimore the other day when i saw a sign for tuckahoe state park. i was wondering if you ever fish there, and what you thought about the park. is it tidal water or fresh water? well please respond when you get a chance, and as always good luck on the water.

Jim,
Thanks for the reply and info. I will take your advice and try to get in touch with him the way you suggested.
As far as the crappie and bluegill go I am still a novice as most of my experience has been in Salt water. I do get a kick out of sticking a cricket on a hook and toss im in the shallows and watch as the bobber moves around and then goes under. lol For some reason I want to do this more and more. The crappie have been very elusive to me as I have not been very successful. YET
