I have a 1970 Abu Garcia 5/6 wt fiberglass rod. I love the rod so I experimented with it through the years. I found that these older slow action rods like a double taper line, I would suggest a 5 wt. If you use a weight forward line I suggest a 4wt…

Out here in sunny, warm southern California, (sorry guys) we don't ice fish, but I'll tell you this, when I caught my giant 12 inch Bluegill a few years ago from a San Diego Lake, the feeling of excitement I got was way better than when I caught my…

Some of those old rods line out a little lighter than what's listed - also glass rods can take a wider variety of line weights. I'd try a 3 or 4 on it if you have it. Some others out there may have more experience with that particular rod and can gi…

Wow! Beautiful fish Jim! Which jig did you get her on? I need to walk on over to LedHed's house and see what he's working on now. His creations are remarkable. Hey are those fish I see in the water behind you?

I have an older 6 ft. Fenwick fiberglass rod (#FF60) that my dad my dad bought back in 1971 that is in perfect condition.  The rod has a sticker that says to use an "AFTMA FLY LINE 5-6".  Is that numbering/line weight system still in use today?  A n…

We usually fish no shallower than 8 feet, especially now with all the summertime weeds and moss. The "average" depth where I have caught most of the large BGs is maybe about 12 ft. But we fish on down into 20 to 30 ft sometimes too. As for a video,…

Yes, that's the reason that I started hooking them backwards. But with the Bluegill that I have cleaned and checked their stomach contents, almost all of them had the remains of something very dark, probably aquatic insects and worms and most defini…

Crickets are the main bait that myself and other trophy Bluegill fishermen use here in southern California, especially at Lake Perris, where many feel a new State record, if not a world record bluegill may be caught in the near future. I fish cricke…

Coldwater/Warmwater Bluegill

Being a fisherman from southern California, where is rarely gets under 40 to 50 degrees in the dead of winter, why do the Blue gill in our lakes here stop biting when we have this cool weather? It is Very hard to even locate them! Most of the lakes and ponds in the northern states freeze over from freezing temperatures, yet you have great Bluegill fishing through the ice. Cold water is cold water, no matter where it is right? Well, Bluegill are Bluegill in any area too right? So how come us fish… Continue

Hey Jeff...are you guys getting some of those fish on Sonny's, 'Ledheds' jigs? We just traded some out with each other and I am having good success with some of his patterns...they are excellent!

Ike works best. That was my first trip to DVL. All the panfish we caught were small like the one in the picture. If you want bull gills, go to Skinner or Parris, both are not very far from DVL. We were up there after catfish.

A whole new way..............well ,that sounds good, would you like to share?
Do you fish of a boat or shore. I think you can take a float tube on lake Parris.
I was looking into that.

Hey i always fish lake perris on a tuesday because on a saturday or sunday Perris is just too busy. My advice would be to go to the back of the island and find some sticks in the water and cast to the outside of them the bigger fish lay on the outside on a bigger small mealworm. Hey if you have any advice on crappie let me know.

I'm wondering now. If it could have been mixed up with some of my flathead minnows. I last stocked them back in late spring. Sharon to answer your question I released him back to fattin up and catch again. Don't know why my bass hadn't eaten him yet.
