Sharon, Bluegill are not considered sportfish in Texas. Confirm with your game warden. Check into the Texas Aquaculture Association and visit with some of the foodfish producers in the state. The TAA has a website where you can find out about the fo…

Yep, that's true. The Morgan Company has gone to great lengths (and expense) to create the genesis of a truly world class fishery. The big bluegill are a product of good overall management, starting with a mature habitat. Add a solid food chain and…

Richmond Mill Lake is undoubtedly the most fascinating lake I have had the pleasure of working on in my entire 30 year career as a private fisheries biologist. It was built in 1835...and was a year old when Davy Crockett was killed in the Alamo. It…

Favorite place to catch bluegill?
My pond(s) in Texas
Do you have a pond? If so, describe it.
I have 8 ponds on 12 acres. Two of them are designed to grow bluegill to catch for fun. One of those pods was designed for swimming and I also use it for large quantities of easy to catch bluegill. The second is for trophy fish, bass and bluegill. Two others are designed to grow bluegill fingerlings for profit. One other happens to have bluegill in it, thanks to the migratory efforts of young ones during rainy spring seasons.

Bluegill are a "Big" Deal

The first fish I ever caught was a sunfish, a smallish big-mouthed creature my dad said was a 'bream' and that I later learned was a green sunfish. I would venture to say the first fish many, many kids catch is a sunfish...and bluegill are the kings of panfish.
As a professional fisheries biologist with 30 years in the pond management business, helping people design, build, stock and manage private fishing lakes and ponds all over the nation, bluegill are head and shoulders above all fish as my… Continue

When you speak of not keeping your larger fish, what size pond or lake do you mean? I have a seven acre pond that I keep a close eye on and regularly harvest large gills from.

Welcome, Bob! It's really great to have the actual "Pond Boss" himself as a member. I've learned virtually everything I know about pond bluegill management from Pond Boss. I appreciate everything you do.

Thank you very much for that info, BC! My usual spot out there (and they only one I know, really) is Bethany Reservoir, up near the wind farms, a mile or 2 west of Clifton Court Forebay. It has loads of bluegill and I caught a 9" redear last time I…

Hey , I'm a flyroder and use crickets all the time , about the only time I use artificial flys is when I run out of crickets or I'm fishing for smallmouths. The only limitation is it's harder to fish deeper than your flyrod is long but it is possibl…

Although I usually fish for bass, the most fun I've ever had fishing was when I found myself casting Strike King Bitsy Minnows and Rapala CD1's into a school of bull blue gills suspending under a creek bridge. The action was nonstop. Since then, I'…

AWESOME question! Pop-up is the main bite early and I call that a "lift". If you have proper gear- your float will (( lift )) slightly up in the water. The reason I talk about sensitivity in a setup is that fish eject their food all day long. Somet…

Is that cricket PINK?????? Greg, the lengths you have gone to fashion a cricket for a flyrod. I must apologize. I should have told you you could use REAL crickets on a flyrod. # 10 hook, single "B" sinker, small float, rollcast. I've read Shooter's…
