New Waters

Suppose you moved this winter, to an unfamiliar area where you don't know anybody and have never fished.  How would you look for good bluegill waters?  How would you test them?Continue

First Day Flies

If you lived in a midwestern state, and were hoping that tomorrow would be the first day for open-water fishing, what might be the ten flies you'd pick to take in your vest?Continue

Bluegills change color?

Many of the bg's I've caught in the last few days seem to me to be lighter in color.  Do they change color with the seasons?  We've had several days of cool nights and days - it's fall, after all. …Continue

Bluegill flies
1 Reply

Could we have a group of photos and instructions for great bluegill flies.  I'll post one that I just made and that was good in my pond yesterday.  More?

What type of animal is a bluegill?
no, but I have access to a friend's 2 acre pond
What state are you from? This can help us get together for fishing trips!
Iowa

When I was young, I did a lot of fly fishing, mostly for trout in western waters.  Then I just worked, for 40 years.  Now, I've retired (again) and am serious about fishing again.  I'd like to become an expert bluegill fisherman.  That 10-incher I mentioned taught me that a BG that size on a 4-lb test leader was a thrill equal to the largest trout I used to catch.  And, around central Iowa there are many more Bluegills than trout.

I want to learn how to find and catch Big Bluegills - big enough to eat.  That's what I'm here for.

Thanks!         Bob.

Bluegill Flies

I'd like to hear from Bluegill fly tyers.  There are so many patterns in books and on Web, but I can't believe that all are successful.  How about tyers in midwest that have proven favorites?

Pictures would be nice.
